English & Math Placement Exams

English Placement Exam

The ACCUPLACER Writing Exam is for students who wish to place into English 101 without the additional support course.

If you have earned one of the following, then you do not need to take this exam. 

  • 18 ACT English or
  • 500 SAT Evidence-based Reading and Writing or
  • Have already taken the ACCUPLACER Writing exam and earned a 250 or
  • Have a final cumulative High School GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)

If you do not meet one of the English requirements above, and have never taken a college level English course, then you then you MUST TAKE the ACCUPLACER English Placement Exam to enroll in a English course without the additional 3-credit hour support course.

Students needing to take the English Placement Exam are required to complete the exam PRIOR TO attending Orientation. This is to ensure proper course placement at orientation. Reservations are required and can be made by clicking the registration link below. Students must bring a photo ID with them to the exam.


Math Placement Exams

There are two Math Placement Exam options for students: ALEKS PPL & ACCUPLACER QRAS.

Option 1: ALEKS PPL: The ALEKS PPL Math Assessment is primarily for students in STEM majors. In the Catalog (linked here), use the search feature and find your academic major to determine if your major requires you to take Math 109, 110, 143, or 270. If your ACT/SAT score is not sufficient for you to begin in Math 109, 110, 143 or 270, then you should take the ALEKS PPL. 

The ALEKS PPL assessment exam is an online exam administered by the McGraw Hill Company. For information about the exam and associated learning tools please visit the Math Department's ALEKS PPL page.

Students needing to take the ALEKS PPL Math Assessment are required to complete the exam PRIOR TO attending Orientation. This is to ensure proper course placement at orientation. For registration and scheduling please visit the UL Lafayette ALEKS PPL page (this is an external page at secure.aleks.com). You must log in to this webpage with your ULID and password.
 

Option 2: ACCUPLACER QRAS: In the Catalog (linked here), use the search feature and find your academic major to determine if your major requires you to take Math 102 or 105. If your ACT/SAT score is not sufficient for you to begin in Math 102 or 105, then you MUST TAKE the ACCUPLACER QRAS Math Placement Exam in an attempt to enroll in Math 102 (Quantitative Reasoning) without the additional 2-3 credit hour lab or Math 105 (College Algebra) without the additional 2-3 credit hour lab.

Should you take the ACCUPLACER QRAS Math Placement Exam? 

If the first math required in your curriculum is Math 102 (typically College of Liberal Arts and College of the Arts majors):

Should you take this exam?
If you have earned one of the following, then you do not need to take this exam.

  • 19 ACT Math or
  • 510 SAT Math or
  • Have already taken the ACCUPLACER QRAS exam and earned a 250 or ALEKS PPL and earned a 35 or
  • Have a final cumulative High School GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)

If the first math required in your curriculum is NOT Math 102 and you wish to place into Math 105:

Should you take this exam?
If you have earned one of the following, then you do not need to take this exam.

  • 21 ACT Math or
  • 530 SAT Math or
  • Have already taken the ACCUPLACER QRAS exam and earned a 263 or ALEKS PPL and earned a 35 or
  • Have a final cumulative High School GPA of 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale)

If you do not meet one of the Math requirements above, and have never taken a college level Math course, then you MUST TAKE the ACCUPLACER QRAS Math Placement Exam to enroll in a Math course without the additional support course. 

Students needing to take the ACCUPLACER QRAS Math Placement Exam are required to complete the exam PRIOR TO attending Orientation. This is to ensure proper course placement. Reservations are required and can be made by clicking the registration link below. Students must bring a photo ID with them to the exam.
 

ACCUPLACER Exam Dates

The ACCUPLACER English & Math Placement Exams will be offered on select weekdays from 2:00-5:30 PM. Once you sign up for the exam below, a representative from the Office of Undergraduate Recruitment will contact you to schedule your exam date. If you have not heard from the Office of Recruitment after 5 business days, please email them at accuplacer@louisiana.edu

ACCUPLACER Exam Registration

After you sign up for an ACCUPLACER exam, a representative from the Office of Undergraduate Recruitment will contact you via the cell phone number you provide to schedule your exam date.

1. Please visit the ACCUPLACER Student Portal website for tools and resources to help you prepare for your placement exam. 

2. ACCUPLACER Exam details:

  • The Math Exam is 20 questions with 2 sample questions and is untimed. 
  • The Writing Exam is 25 questions with 2 sample questions and is untimed.
  • Outside calculators are not allowed, however a calculator will be provided within the Math Exam on some questions.
  • The Writing Exam has a highlighter option.
