The University of Louisiana at Lafayette offers two types of tests for first-time freshmen. The Math Placement Exam and Math 109 Qualifying Exam, coordinated by the Math Department, and Advance Credit Exams, which are offered in various subjects, and coordinated by the Office of Orientation.
Freshman Math Placement Exam
This mathematics placement exam is for students who wish to place into MATH 092, 100, 105, or 107. The mathematics placement exam may be taken once per semester. Reservations are not required, but students must bring a photo ID to the test.
Who should consider taking this optional placement exam?
- Students who have an ACT MATH sub-score of 17 may not schedule MATH at the University without a satisfactory score on this exam.
- Students who have between a 17 and a 21 MATH sub-score on the ACT who wish to challenge their placement into MATH 092 (Intermediate Algebra) or MATH 100 (Fundamentals of College Algebra).

Advance Credit Exams (ACE) - March 17 - 19, 2010
The Advance Credit Exam Program is an invitational program for high achieving students admitted to UL Lafayette. It is offered in conjunction with our Early Freshman Orientation program. Students entering UL in the summer or fall session who meet eligibility requirements will be eligible to attend this session.
Advanced Credit Exams will take place on March 17, 2010 from 3:00 PM - 6:15 PM and March 18, 2010 from 7:30 AM - 12:30 PM.
Reservations for this program are accepted on-line and are managed by the Office of Orientation.
Advance Credit Exams - Additional Test Dates
Students entering UL Lafayette in the Summer and Fall 2010 semesters have two additional opportunities to attempt Advance Credit Exams. Please note that eligibility requirements apply. Each exam may only be attempted once.
Reservations for these additional test dates are accepted by phone (where applicable) and are managed by the academic department.

| Test Content Will Include: |
Part I: Students must submit a 7-10 page research paper using MLA citation style. The paper can be on any topic and must have a clear position (argument) on the topic, supported by adequate evidence from scholarly sources (minimum of 4 sources). Students are also required to submit a letter from a teacher, on official school letterhead, certifying that the paper is the student's original work. Students must submit the research paper and letter from the teacher at least 48 hours prior to the exam date. After the committee reviews the letter and verifies that they satisfy the requirements, the student will be notified that s/he may take the second part of the exam.
Part II: Essay Exam: Write an argumentative essay on a topic that will be specified on the exam. The exam will include articles on the topic that the student will be expected to integrate into his or her essay. |

| **Credit for MATH 270, Calculus I, may not be earned through this exam. Students with a Math ACT of 25 earn automatic credit for Math 105, College Algebra. Students with a Math ACT of 30+ earn automatic credit for Math 143, Pre-Calculus Algebra. |
