Testing
 
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette offers two types of tests for first-time freshmen. The Math Placement Exam and Math 109 Qualifying Exam, coordinated by the Math Department, and Advance Credit Exams, which are offered in various subjects, and coordinated by the Office of Orientation.


Math Placement Exam

The Math Placement Exam is for first time freshmen students whose Math ACT is 20 or below and wish to place into MATH 092 (Intermediate Algebra), MATH 100 (Fundamentals of College Algebra), MATH 105 (College Algebra), OR MATH 107 (College Algebra). The Math Placement Exam may be taken once for a given semester. Reservations are not required.

Students who meet any of the following criteria should consider taking this optional placement exam:
  • Students who have an ACT MATH sub-score of 17 may not schedule MATH at the University without a satisfactory score on this exam.
  • Students who have between a 17 and a 20 MATH sub-score on the ACT who wish to challenge their placement into MATH 092 (Intermediate Algebra) or MATH 100 (Fundamentals of College Algebra).
The Test will be held in Maxim Doucet Hall on the following dates (individual room numbers listed with the dates):

  • Picture I.D.
  • Two #2 pencils
  • Calculator (Calculators with symbolic manipulators are not allowed; these include the TI-89, TI-92, voyage, and HP-48G.)

MATH 109 Qualifying Exam

This mathematics placement exam is for Science and Engineering majors who wish to place into MATH 109 (Pre-Calculus Algebra). Permission is required for this exam. Make reservations by contacting the Mathematics Department at (337) 482-6702 or math@louisiana.edu.

Who should consider taking this optional placement exam?
Science & Engineering students with a MATH sub-score between 22 and 24 on the ACT wishing to place into MATH 109 (Pre-Calculus Algebra).
This exam may be taken only once.

Advance Credit Exams (ACE) - April 22-24, 2009

The Advance Credit Exam Program is an invitational program for high achieving students admitted to UL Lafayette. It is offered in conjunction with our Early Freshman Orientation program. Students entering UL in the summer or fall session who meet eligibility requirements will be eligible to attend this session.

Advanced Credit Exams will take place on April 22, 2009 from 3:00 PM - 6:15 PM and April 23, 2009 from 7:30 AM - 12:30 PM.

Reservations for this program are accepted on-line and are managed by the Office of Orientation.

Advance Credit Exams - Additional Test Dates

Students entering UL Lafayette in the Summer and Fall 2009 semesters have two additional opportunities to attempt Advance Credit Exams. Please note that eligibility requirements apply. Each exam may only be attempted once.

Reservations for these additional test dates are accepted by phone (where applicable) and are managed by the academic department.

Advance Credit Exam Opportunities:

Communication

Communication
Eligibility Requirement: Competence in forensics, debate, and theories of effective communication.
Recommended Majors: All majors
Credit Possible: CMCN 200, Principles of Human Communication.
Test Content Will Include: The written portion includes questions on the theory and practice of interpersonal, small group, and public communication. There is no performance requirement.


Computer Literacy

Computer Literacy
Eligibility Requirement: Knowledge or experience with computer technology, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Internet and web searches.
Recommended Majors: All majors, excluding Computer Science, Business & Engineering.
Credit Possible: CMPS 300, Computer Literacy.
Test Content Will Include: All aspects of computer literacy, from common terminology to common applications.
A portion of this exam is “hands-on,” requiring students to exhibit knowledge and skills in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.


Computer Science

Computer Science
Eligibility Requirement: 29 Math ACT and knowledge of C++
Recommended Majors: Science and Engineering majors; MIS
Credit Possible: CMPS 150, Introduction to Computer Science.
Test Content Will Include: Problem solving, structured design of algorithms, implementation of algorithms, and testing and debugging of programs.


Freshman Composition

Freshman Composition*
Eligibility Requirement: 32 English ACT
Note: Research paper requirement included under the test content section.
Recommended Majors: All Majors
Credit Possible: English 102, Composition and Literature
Test Content Will Include: Part I: Students must submit a 7-10 page research paper using MLA citation style. The paper can be on any topic and must have a clear thesis statement that is supported with adequate evidence from scholarly sources (minimum of 4 sources). Students are also required to submit a letter from a teacher, on official school letterhead, certifying that the paper is the student’s original work. Submit research papers and letter from your teacher as you enter the testing room. Part II: Essay Exam: Write an argumentative essay on a topic related to current events or personal experience.
* Students with a 28 English ACT earn automatic credit for English 101, Introduction to Academic Writing.



Math

Math**
Eligibility Requirement: 26 Math ACT
Recommended Majors: All majors
Credit Possible: MATH 105, College Algebra, MATH 109, Pre-Calculus Algebra, and/or MATH 110, Pre-Calculus Trigonometry and Function Theory.
Test Content Will Include: Algebra of polynomials, functions and graphs, linear, exponentials, logarithm functions, systems of equations, matrices, inequalities and trigonometric functions, polar coordinates, and vectors. NOTE: Calculators with symbolic manipulators are not allowed; these include the TI-89, TI-92, voyage, and HP-48G.
**Credit for MATH 270, Calculus I, may not be earned through this exam. Students with a Math ACT of 25 earn automatic credit for Math 105, College Algebra. Students with a Math ACT of 30+ earn automatic credit for Math 109, Pre-Calculus Algebra.

Microcomputer Applications
Eligibility Requirement: Proficient in Microsoft Access 2007, Microsoft Excel 2007, Microsoft Word 2007, and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007.
Recommended Majors: All Majors
Credit Possible: BSAT 205, Microcomputer Applications in Business.
Test Content Will Include: A “hands-on” test where you will create and edit documents while working with Microsoft Access 2007, Microsoft Excel 2007, Microsoft Word 2007, and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007. Show confidence with integration (paste, link, and embed objects in word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation documents).


Modern Languages (French, Spanish, German, Latin)

Modern Languages (French, Spanish, German, Latin)
Eligibility Requirement: Competence in French, Spanish, German, Latin
Recommended Majors: Liberal Arts majors
Credit Possible: Elementary or intermediate course and laboratory (101, 102, 201).
Test Content Will Include: French, Spanish, and German: A standardized test with multiple-choice and reading comprehension sections and grammar structures.
Latin: A short answer test. There is no oral comprehension section of the Latin, French, Spanish, and German test.
